Summer Jobs Service

Summer Jobs Service (SJS) is a program that focuses on providing students with work experience during the summer months. It also provides employers who qualify with a $2.00/hr wage subsidy to hire students. Students may access the resource area in Job Connect (JC) year round to help them plan for summer employment while attending school or to find part-time jobs during the school year. Employers can also post job opportunities for students year round.

SJS supports summer employment for students by providing:

  • Students with information, knowledge and skills, through the resource area in order to find a job on their own;
  • Employers with access to youth who are ready and willing to work;
  • Employers with a $2.00 per hour wage subsidy to hire youth in the summer.Applications are sent out in March of each year.
  • Due dates for applications will be posted each year and applications will be approved by April.

To be eligible for a subsidized placement (SJS), employers must:

  • Operate and offer a job in Ontario;
  • Be in the private, non-profit or broader public sector (municipalitles, schools, universities, colleges, hospitals);
  • Not be related to the student(s) they are hiring (for example, son, daughter, spouse, brother, sister);
  • Be in compliance with Workplace Safety and Insurance Coverage, or alternate workplace safety insurance, and third party liability insurance coverage;
  • Not hire the student(s) before applying for the program;
  • Not displace existing staff with students hired through this program
  • Not be receiving government funds from any other program for the same student or job placement.
