The Family Support Worker will work closely with the First Nations Band Representative and Prevent Services to provide practical support and early intervention for families at-risk of becoming involved in the Child Welfare System. The Family Support Worker functions within the strategic vision of Animakee Wa Zhing #37 First Nation’s Child and Family Advocacy Department and First Nations Band Representative Team.

Duties of this LEAP Job Posting:
  • Provide practical assistance, advocacy for children, caregivers and families in order to enhance family functioning, prevent the admission of children to care, and facilitate the earliest possible discharge of children in care
  • Plan and deliver prevention focused community-based activities and educational opportunities to promote healthy families and child & youth development
  • Facilitate Traditional and evidence-informed parenting education and training for parents and caregivers
  • Provide parenting support services to families that are involved in the child welfare system in order to strengthen the family and work toward reunification
  • Assist families in the development of life-skills in the areas of financial management, cooking and meal preparation, housekeeping and maintaining a safe and healthy home environment
  • Provide transportation assistance for families with barriers to attending appointments outside of the community
  • Liaise with Child and Family Advocacy Team, Child and Family Services and other external service providers to ensure timely wholistic supports for families of Animakee Wa Zhing #37
  • Maintain client records and other documentation
  • Other duties as required
Qualifications for this LEAP Job Posting:
  • Grade 12 education and two years’ experience working in the social services sector, ideally in an agency that works with Indigenous children, youth and families
  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in social services is an asset
  • Ability to work as a team player and meet deadlines as required;
  • Good written and oral communication skills required; ability to speak Anishinaabemowin is an asset
  • First Aid and CPR certifications or willing to obtain (this is paid for by the community);
  • Must provide a Vulnerable Sector Check and possess a valid driver’s license
