A promising opportunity for a first to third year law student with an interest in exploring the pursuit of a career in Indigenous Law.  This person will work with a senior lawyer on special projects on behalf of several Northwestern Ontario First Nation communities.

Duties of this LEAP Job Posting:
  • Work on one or more short-term projects with the focus on development of Indigenous child welfare law and jurisdiction
  • Engage with highly political and sensitive legal matters relating to Aboriginal and Treaty rights, First Nation law
  • Meet with clients in sometimes remote northern communities, with the supervising lawyer, in order to obtain instructions and gather information from elected officials and Elders/Knowledge Keppers
  • Summarize historical and recent legal opinions and translate them into a useable database of law
  • Create memorandums of law and assist in the writing of law specific to a First Nation community

Conditions of Employment:

  • The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid
  • A Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the applicant(s) or successful candidate(s)
Qualifications for this LEAP Job Posting:
  • Current enrollment as a 1L, 2L, or 3L student of an LLB or JD program
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to establish effective and maintain working relationships with various stakeholders
  • Ability to conduct research using physical and electronic research tools
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including explaining technical and legal information in plain language and preparing reports and legal documents
