Duties:
Iskatewizaagegan No. 39 Independent First Nation is seeking a qualified and motivated Director of Public Works to lead the planning, management, and delivery of essential community infrastructure and services. This leadership role ensures safe, reliable, and sustainable infrastructure systems that support the community’s health, safety, and long-term growth. The Director oversees public works operations, including water and wastewater systems, roads and drainage, solid waste services, community facilities, fleet management, and capital infrastructure projects. Reporting to senior administration and working closely with Chief and Council, the Director provides strategic and operational leadership. The role also ensures regulatory compliance, manages departmental budgets, supervises staff, and supports long-term infrastructure planning.
- Oversee maintenance of water, wastewater, roads, drainage, solid waste, and community facilities
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs
- Manage capital infrastructure projects from planning through completion
- Supervise contractors, engineers, and consultants
- Prepare and manage departmental operating budgets
- Maintain asset inventory and long-term capital planning
- Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, environmental, and ISC standards
- Supervise and mentor Public Works staff
- Respond to infrastructure emergencies as required
Qualifications:
- Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Environmental Technology, Public Administration, or related field; OR equivalent experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in public works or infrastructure management
- Minimum 3 years supervisory experience
- Experience managing capital projects and budgets
- Preferred Certifications
- Water and/or Wastewater Operator Certification
- PMP (asset)
- First Aid/CPR and WHMIS
- Valid Driver’s License
Working Conditions
- Combination of office and field work
- Exposure to varying weather conditions
- On-call availability for emergencies
- Occasional extended hours during peak construction or urgent situations
- Successful candidate will be required to submit a clean Criminal Background Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
