The Mental Health and Addictions Counsellor will facilitate the IMHA Support Program and provide culturally relevant, front- line mental health and addiction interventions for Indigenous clients involved in the justice system, with a focus on supporting vulnerable women.
Duties:
- Facilitate an established group program for women involved in the justice system, with flexibility to adapt programming for one-on-one service delivery as needed. Group sessions will be held weekly for a minimum of 2 hours over an 8-week period
- Provide group programming, case management, and crisis intervention services. Programming will focus on mental health and addiction supports, with additional emphasis on exploitation and human trafficking risks affecting vulnerable women in the community
- Offer both group and individual mental health and addiction support, including crisis response as required
- Develop individualized, trauma-informed harm reduction and safety plans for clients
- Provide mental health, addiction, and trauma recovery support, as well as life-skills development to promote healing, holistic wellness, recovery, and client safety
- Connect clients with emergency and community-based supports as needed
- Support clients in navigating government systems and services to enhance stabilization and community reintegration
- Collaborate with other service providers to establish “circles of care” (wraparound service models) to improve client outcomes
- Build rapport, trust, and mutual understanding with clients, including through shared lived experience where applicable
- Complete internal and external referrals to culturally appropriate services and supports, including Elders, Knowledge
- Keepers, and access to ceremonial or land-based healing opportunities, as available
Qualifications:
- Registered Mental Health Counsellor/Practitioner
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in mental health and addictions, including experience using culturally informed approaches
- Strong knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture and history, particularly the impacts of trauma, family violence, human trafficking and community outreach
- Demonstrated ability to organize, evaluate, and communicate information effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Experienced in facilitating groups and workshops
- Skilled in program planning, development, implementation, data collection, and evaluation
- Proficiency in computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, internet use)
- Valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle
- Vulnerable Persons Check (required upon offer of employment)
