Duties of this LEAP Job Posting:

The Alternative Care Worker is a full-time permanent program position. The Alternative Care Worker provides direct services to alternative care homes and the agency operated homes where children have been placed in temporary or long-term care. The Alternative Care Worker provides case management services to ensure the needs of alternative care and agency operated homes are met according to Kitapinoonjiiminanik Family Services philosophy, First Nation standards, Provincial regulations, standards and licensing requirements. The Alternative Care Worker coordinated the efforts of a team of staff and volunteers to ensure their efforts culminate in meeting the objective of the team.

The Alternative Care Worker reports to the Resource Manager on all aspects of job functions and will exercise the following duties under the supervision of the Resource Manager:

Qualifications for this LEAP Job Posting:
  • Bachelor of Social Work Degree. However, others with a combination of skills, education and experience that would allow them to do the job may be considered
  • Thorough knowledge of the Child and Family Services Act and Regulations, particularly in the application of Part X relating to Customary Care of the First Nations
  • Thorough knowledge of Provincial Standards and Foster Care – Licensing
  • Expert knowledge of Customary Care and the philosophy of service development and delivery; the communities and family structure, as well as local First Nation customs and traditions
  • Working knowledge of the administrative structure and operations of Aboriginal Child and Family Services including the service delivery model, policies, procedure and guidelines
  • Strong commitment to help Anishinaabe children and their families by providing services in ways that respect Anishinaabe cultural and spiritual practices
  • Commitment to provide services in the Anishinaabe context of extended family and community involvement
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience in the recruitment and approval process of Alternative Care homes with a proven ability to make public presentations
  • Ability to take direction and work within the Agency’s philosophy, policies, procedures and guidelines, and provincial regulations, standards and licensing requirements
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary Child Welfare team
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct training workshops
  • Excellent time management, planning, organization, problem-solving, decision-making and liaison skills
  • Working knowledge of group dynamics, consultation and conflict resolution techniques
  • Ability to establish and maintain trusting relationships with caregivers and their families
  • Ability to establish and maintain purposeful relationships with Management, staff, Family Services Committees and all other relevant service providers
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work effectively with caregivers and their families
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Experience working with a computerized client database
  • Commitment to ensure the highest level of confidentiality at all times
  • Ability to flex daily work hours as determined by the Resource Manager
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License and be willing to travel
  • Must provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Check and Driver’s Abstract
  • Ability to speak Ojibway is preferred and a definite asset
