Duties:

Kinew Childcare Centre is seeking a full-time Cook to support its nutritional program by preparing and serving healthy meals and snacks for children in accordance with Canada’s Food Guide and public health regulations. The Cook will maintain a clean, safe, organized, and welcoming kitchen while supporting the children’s daily nutritional needs.

 

  • Prepare and serve nutritious meals and snacks for children in accordance with approved menus, dietary requirements, and food safety standards.
  • Collaborate with the Daycare Supervisor and childcare staff to develop, review, and update menus that reflect Canada’s Food Guide, children’s nutritional needs, cultural food preferences, allergies, and dietary restrictions.
  • Recommend menu changes based on children’s needs, available ingredients, seasonal foods, and program requirements.
  • Follow safe food-handling practices and meet applicable requirements under the Child Care and Early Years Act, public health standards, and Kinew Childcare Centre policies.
  • Accommodate children’s allergies, cultural food preferences, and dietary restrictions as directed, while taking appropriate steps to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and sanitary food preparation, storage, dishwashing, and kitchen areas.
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, utensils, dishes, and food-contact surfaces each day.
  • Store, label, rotate, and monitor food supplies to support food safety and reduce waste.
  • Maintain required records, including temperature logs, menu substitutions, allergy information, and food inventory.
  • Monitor food inventory and advise the Daycare Supervisor when supplies or equipment need to be ordered.
  • Assist with laundry or light cleaning duties when required.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by the Daycare Supervisor.

 

Qualifications:

  • Education: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent (GED).
  • Certification: Valid Food Handler’s Certificate.
  • Experience: At least one (1) year of experience in food preparation or a related setting.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR (Level C).
  • Up-to-date immunization record.
  • Satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (required prior to start).
  • Knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, language, and traditional foods.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.

 

Work Conditions:

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs and stand for extended periods.
  • Fast-paced environment with children and staff present daily.
