Shoal Lake 40 First Nation is seeking a qualified and dedicated individual for the position of Elementary School Principal at the Harvey Redsky Memorial School. The school serves students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8 and is committed to providing a high-quality, culturally responsive learning environment that supports student achievement, well-being, and community values.

The principal will be responsible for supporting the daily operations and on-going development of the Harvey Redsky Memorial School (HRMS) and its programs. On-going monitoring and reporting, including supervision and evaluation of teaching and support staff. Including accurate and timely preparation and submission of all reporting required under the Ontario Ministry of Education and Indigenous Services Canada compliances. Must possess knowledge and expertise in school administration, instructional leadership, and staff supervision to ensure programming, standards, expectations and learning outcomes are met.

In addition, liaise with various community stakeholders, agencies, businesses, organizations and government departments. More importantly, culturally sensitive to community needs and aspirations.

Responsibilities:

  • Aid in the overseeing of program and course development and delivery
  • Identify areas for continuing program development
  • Ensure the availability of required resources for students and staff
  • Identify areas of need or areas in need of further enhancement related to the school program, operations or facility
  • Develop partnerships with potential cooperative education mentors, organizations and businesses
  • Provide on-going support and encouragement to students and staff

Administration

  • Provide internal/external program reporting as required
  • Maintain student and school records as required by ISC and the Ontario Ministry of Education
  • Supervise staff and conduct performance reviews as required
  • Financial and operational monitoring and reporting
  • Assist in the short- and long-term planning for operations
  • Liaise with Ministry of Education and ISC as required to ensure on-going compliance
  • Liaise and work with the Council Member / Portfolio & Leadership to support students
  • Contribute to the monitoring and implementing of school-wide rewards and/or disciplinary action to support excellence in both staff and student performance and behavior

Leadership

  • Identify sources, resources and funding for the HRMS programs and activities.
  • Develop and enhance relationships with external organizations, businesses and government departments
  • Develop and enhance relationships with First Nation Education Authorities, parents, and education counsellors
  • Development of new initiatives related to school programs, to support the First Nation and the members.
  • Other activities as may be required
  • Assist with the development of student or staff recruitment materials
  • Assist with the development of education resources and content for the HRMS website.

Qualifications:

Proficient knowledge in the following areas:

  • Current Certificate of Qualification and Registration and membership in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers
  • Ontario Principal’s qualifications recorded on their Ontario College of Teachers
  • Certificate of Qualification and Registration
  • Knowledge of ISC education funding and programs
  • Knowledge of First Nation governance, cultures and lifestyles
  • Knowledge of Ojibwe would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge and experience with computer systems and liaison with Bimose Tribal Council’s IT team.
  • Experience working in a First Nation school.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and initiative.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, presentation, and analytical skills
  • A valid Ontario Driver’s License and willingness to travel.
  • A criminal reference check, vulnerable sector check and a driver’s abstract.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality in performing the duties of Principal and demonstrate the following personal attributes:
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of education stakeholders (e.g. parents, students, co-workers, administrators, government representatives) and to achieve results through a consultative approach.
