Under the supervision of the Tea Room Manager, the successful candidate will provide guided tours of the Mather-Walls House in Keewatin and be host/hostess for the Victorian tea room. Work schedule arranged in consultation with the Tea House Manager. The position can also be supervised by the supervisory team and/or LOWHS Board members.

Mather-Walls House built in 1889 contains nineteenth century furnishing and interpretive displays highlighting the significant impact of the Mather family on the development of the area. The home acts as a showcase for historical artifacts and as a meeting place where City of Kenora residents and visitors alike can enjoy the ambiance of the wonderful heritage setting.

 

Duties:

  • To serve as a goodwill ambassador for the Lake of the Woods Historical Society and act as host/hostess of Mather-Walls House.
  • Provide colourful and informative tours of the Mather-Walls House heritage site.
  • Introduce tourists and local visitors to period furniture and other historic material on display in the house.
  • If wish to, wear period costume when greeting and serving visitors.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and efficient operation of the Victorian Tea Room and manage the Gift Shop sales.
  • Responsible for petty cash and monies received from the Tea Room and Gift Shop sales. Maintain Victorian Tea Room service. Operate the summer kitchen including tea, coffee, juice, desserts.
  • Serve tea, coffee, juice, and desserts.
  • Maintain specified food health standards
    • do not leave food uncovered for any length of time;
    • ensure kitchen is completely tidy in preparation for the next day operations, including the kitchen and floor washed/cleaned daily.
    • Public Health food standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the house which includes daily vacuuming, dusting, room organization, place settings, bathrooms cleaned and disinfected, etc.
  • Ensure display and archival displays are maintained in showroom condition which includes room displays as well as cabinet displays.
  • Ensure outside grounds are kept neat, tidy, doing watering, weeding and pruning of gardens.
  • Sidewalks and walkways to be cleaned daily and kept free of weed growth and clutter.
  • Answer telephone, open and close the house according to security directions; complete daily service forms recording number of visitors, income from all sources, hours of work performed; report problem areas, recommend improvements, note supplies required.

Qualifications:

  • Mandatory – have or willing to attain Food Handlers Course
