Summer Job Placement – Administrative/Prevention Assistant

Duties:

Northwestern Ontario Métis Child and Family Services is a non-profit agency providing culturally safe support services for children, youth, families and elders using a Wholistic Service Delivery Model (WSDM).

Reporting to the Program Supervisor, the Administrative / Prevention Assistant will provide general administrative and program support. The successful candidate will perform a full range of secretarial and prevention-related support services to the agency. This position is dependent upon meeting the requirements for funding provided by the Métis Nation of Ontario Summer Career Placement Wage Subsidy Program, which is specifically designated for supporting Métis students in the workforce.

The Administrative/Prevention Assistant is responsible for a variety of administrative and secretarial tasks such as answering calls, preparing and managing correspondence, organizing travel, managing appointments, and maintaining a document management system. The incumbent will also assist the Prevention and Preservation team with program delivery.

 

Qualifications:

  • Must be a secondary or post-secondary student
  • Currently enrolled in or aspiring to enroll in a post-secondary program, with preference given to those currently enrolled or seeking to enroll in a Business or Social Services program
  • Knowledge of NWOMCFS vision and mission, structure, and programs
  • Respect for and understanding of Métis culture and cultural practices
  • Ability to advocate firmly and effectively for Métis people
  • Secretarial and administrative experience, including knowledge of office procedures, is an asset
  • Working knowledge of the practices and procedures of a child well-being agency
  • Knowledge of computer equipment with related software such as Windows, Word, Outlook and related database applications
  • Experience with file management and record keeping systems for service delivery agencies
  • Ability to field, interpret, and re-direct inquiries related to the NWOMCFS services and programs
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new computerized programs
  • Demonstrated initiative, time management, and excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working effectively as a team member with minimal supervision
  • Professional integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to speak Michif is an asset
  • Must provide a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening

 

Working Conditions: 

This is a full-time position working standard office hours (35 hours per week). This position functions in a normal office environment with extended periods of sitting using typical office equipment. There are no unusual physical demands. The noise level can be moderate to high. The position may expose the successful applicant to high levels of tension and there may be some challenging contacts or situations. Given the traditional practices of Indigenous people, from time-to-time exposure to smoke from the burning of sacred medicines; tobacco, sweet grass, sage, or cedar, may also occur.
