Duties of this LEAP Job Posting:

Reporting to the Equine Manager, the Equine Facilitator is responsible for delivering and leading equine-assisted sessions, ensuring safety, personal development, and proper animal handling. The Equine Facilitator will oversee client interactions, monitor risk management, and support programming in collaboration with the Niigaanning Bimaadiziwin Developmental Services (NBDS) team. The Equine Facilitator works closely with other Kenora Chiefs Advisory (KCA) departments and Treaty 3 organizations to provide culturally safe programming focused on mental health, addictions, and wellness.

Equine Program Delivery & Client Support

  • Facilitate equine programming such as horsemanship, Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL), farm time, trail rides, and Spirit Horse sessions.
  • Assist clients with horse-related activities, providing guidance on handling, grooming, and care techniques to build confidence and connection.
  • Oversee therapeutic individual and group equine sessions, ensuring safety and inclusivity.
  • Educate staff, volunteers, and clients on equine behaviour and care.
  • Implement best practices for equine-facilitated wellness programs, integrating traditional knowledge and cultural teachings where appropriate.
  • Ensure the safety of clients, horses, and staff during all activities.

Equine & Facility Care

  • Oversee the daily care of horses and all animals, including feeding, watering, grooming and cleaning of the stalls, paddocks and pastures.
  • Monitor the health and behaviour of horses and other animals, identifying, addressing, and recording changes and concerns.
  • Conduct regular assessments of horse temperament, soundness, and workload to ensure suitability for equine-assisted activities.
  • Support the integration of new horses into the program.
  • Ensure tack, equipment, fencing and facilities are maintained for safety, reporting necessary repairs promptly to the Manager.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming environment for staff, clients, and animals.

Program Support & Additional Responsibilities

  • Support the 8 First Nation communities in identifying needs for celebrations, events, and programming at the Youth & Family Wellness Camp.
  • Promote service access that reflects culture, ensuring First Nations, Métis, and Indigenous peoples are treated with respect, compassion, and cultural understanding.
  • Collaborate with First Nation and Kenora community-based services to deliver responsive programming and foster positive relationships.
  • Build and maintain effective partnerships with Niigaanning Bimaadiziwin Developmental Services (NBDS) to coordinate Equine Therapy sessions.
  • Ensure strong working relationships with KCA programs, partner organizations, and community groups.
  • Act as Trail Guides
  • Willing to work flexible hours to support the Youth & Family Wellness Camp & Equine Program.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications for this LEAP Job Posting:

Equine Experience & Knowledge

  • Excellent horsemanship skills with knowledge of equine behavioral management techniques.
  • Experience in horse training is an asset.
  • Solid understanding of equine nutrition and basic medical treatments for animals.

Education & Certifications

  • Equine-Assisted Learning certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Equine First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Valid CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.

Professional & Interpersonal Skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience working with First Nations communities is considered an asset.
  • Understanding of the Anishinaabe (Ojibway) language is an asset.

Work Environment & Requirements

  • Physically and mentally capable of working long hours in labor-intensive and inclement weather conditions.
  • Flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Current satisfactory criminal reference check with a vulnerable sector search required.
