Founded in 2002, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s intermediate- and high-level radioactive waste, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.
The NWMO has been guided for more than 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders who are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. In 2024, the NWMO selected Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation (WLON)-Ignace area as the site for our Deep Geological Repository for used nuclear fuel.
This decision means our office and staff will, in the future, be relocating to Ignace, ON, and the DGR will be situated in the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area. Infrastructure planning and development is underway to support this transition and ensure that both the community and our employees are well-served and supported now and in the future.

Duties of this LEAP Job Posting: Reporting to the Manager, Indigenous Knowledge & Reconciliation, the Reconciliation Coordinator will foster a relationship and network with opinion leaders, community members, youth, Elders and others to implement Indigenous knowledge policy and Reconciliation policy. In addition, work with Senior Advisors to develop Reconciliation activities associated with the Reconciliation training program and corporate objectives related to Reconciliation
- Foster a relationship and network with opinion leaders, community members, youth, elders and others to implement Indigenous knowledge policies and procedures. Develop training opportunities such as cultural awareness and knowledge system workshops as a method to transfer information and knowledge to NWMO staff and executive.
- Coordinate external relationships with Elders, Indigenous organizations, external advisors, and external experts.
- Work with Senior Advisors and Indigenous and Municipal Relations Managers s to develop and coordinate Reconciliation activities associated with the Reconciliation training program and corporate objectives related to Reconciliation. Recommend, develop, and implement effective community relations and internal communications programs to address issues and impacts, and to promote and maintain support for NWMO’s commitments to Reconciliation.
- Deliver presentations and facilitate discussion within Indigenous Relations training programs and incorporate into learnings and future programming. Deliver training to contractors and implement Reconciliation activities at the community level and industry partners.
- Collaborate with the Manager, Indigenous Knowledge & Reconciliation to develop and integrate an internal strategy of the Indigenous Knowledge Policy and Reconciliation Policy implementation.
- Coordinate procurement related activities for the department. Integrate NWMO finance and procurement policies when working with communities/organizations to ensure a successful working relationship between NWMO and Indigenous communities/organizations
- Manage records for Indigenous Relations activities to ensure conformance to corporate policies.
- Coordinate and review the Indigenous Knowledge Policy and recommend improvements. Analyze the risk of equating research into corporate Policy to ensure the policy is effective for both the NWMO and communities offering NWMO their Indigenous Knowledge.
- Represent the Indigenous, Municipal Relations and Transportation Department at various NWMO events such as Open Houses, Tradeshows/Booths as required.
- Keep current of emerging best practice in social and community-based processes as it relates to Indigenous peoples by staying up to date on current Indigenous issues.
- Develop reports on the Council of Elders meetings to the Board of Directors and Advisory Council on the Indigenous Relations activities throughout the year.
- Synthesize information regarding the Indigenous Relations department activities input to the Annual and Tri Annual reports.
- Participate in strategic development of the Reconciliation Resource Program.
- Manage venue contracts associated with the Council of Elders meetings. Comparing all venues and selecting the venue that best meets the needs of the Council of Elders and NWMO business needs. The process includes negotiations amongst venues to ensure all parties needs are met. Review and adjust contracts to ensure successful execution of Council of Elders meeting. Work with the venue to develop the work plan and details associated for the successful execution of the Council of Elders meetings.
- Manage the Council of Elders and Youth meeting schedules, agendas, coordination of Council support for other NWMO related activities.
- Manage the relationships of the Council members between meetings, providing updates, and sharing relevant materials to ensure strong respectful relationships are maintained.
- Coordinate initiation and maintenance of portions of NWMO website related to engagement activities that provides information (intranet and NWMO internet website) on NWMO’s related engagement activities.
- Coordinate seminars, workshops with in NWMO to support awareness and implementation of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s Indigenous Relations program
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications for this LEAP Job Posting:
- 4 year university education in social studies or by having the equivalent education.
- Over 4 years and up to and including 6 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
- Knowledge of community development, public engagement and public policy and understanding of Indigenous organizational structure and culture in Canada and Indigenous consultation.
- Requires an excellent knowledge of communications principles and techniques to deliver presentations and foster relationships with a variety of community leaders.
- Demonstrated strong relationship management skills to develop and maintain positive relationships with a wide variety of internal and external rightsholders, including senior Indigenous advisors. Requires strong organizational skills to manage workload with competing priorities and tight timeframes and to work effectively under pressure.
- Requires excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Demonstrated experience in dealing with Indigenous advisors, opinion leaders, community leaders, youth and elders to foster an inclusive and effective relationship with the nuclear waste industry. Requires a broad network of relationships with Indigenous peoples and a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively.
- Experience in delivering presentations to internal and external audiences and experience to represent the company at a variety of public events.
- Requires communications experience to conceptualize easily, learn quickly and independently exercise good judgement and demonstrate initiative to develop and implement Reconciliation strategies and communication programs.
- Requires experience to understand the procurement and finance process to review and evaluate and manage venue contracts and monitor budget.
- Requires excellent project management and organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail and experience in providing a strong customer service orientation to the work.
- Highly proficient in a variety of standard word processing, presentation, and desktop publishing applications.
- Preference will be given to applicants with an understanding of Indigenous communities and culture in Ontario.

Candidates residing in the Greater Toronto Area: Office Location – 22 St. Clair Avenue East until their role is required to relocate.
NWMO currently operates in a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office (Tuesdays being universal) and 2 days working from home.
