Duties of this LEAP Job Posting:

As Director of Care (DOC), you will ensure an exceptional level of care for all residents to enhance their overall quality of life. In consultation with the Executive Director/Administrator, plans, develops and leads the implementation and delivery of high-quality resident care services that complies Fixing Long Term Care Act and Regulations, 2021, and other relevant legislations, policies and standards, and reflects the organization’s vision, strategic direction and resident centered approach.

  • Provides effective leadership and management of the nursing department to ensure the efficient utilization of human, physical, and financial resources that complies Fixing Long Term Care Act and Regulations, 2021, and other relevant legislations, policies and standards, and reflects the organization’s vision, strategic direction and resident centered approach.
  • Develops and updates policies and procedures relating to nursing and resident care and health and safety issue
  • Participates in creating and updating nursing policies, procedures, and programs to ensure compliance with best practices and applicable legislative requirements.
  • Develops, implements, evaluates and continuously improves effective risk management and quality improvement programs, including infection control, occupational health and safety, incidents and falls, etc
  • Follows up on all resident incidents and initiates and follows-up on corrective action as required.
  • Supervises and continuously strives to improve the Medication Administration Program.
  • Chairs and participates in various internal and external committees, meetings, and programs.
  • Provides overall direction and oversight to the Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Program.
  • Develops and implements an effective internal budgeting, expenditure and inventory control system for the nursing department. Ensures efficient and responsible use of resources in ensuring good value for money
  • Ensures adequate staffing to meet the needs of the Nursing Department; Recruits appropriate staff to complement the team, and coaches, develops, evaluates and appropriately deploys staff to ensure a strong, effective and efficient team with good morale
  • Provide leadership in matters relating to labour relations including participation in union negotiations.
  • Oversees orientation and in-service training programs for the professional and nonprofessional nursing staff, and performs other staff development functions as required
  • Receives and reviews all applications for admission of residents into the LTC home and supervises transfers and discharges of residents
  • Promotes a caring environment which is conducive to the provision and practice of therapeutically effective nursing care
  • Follows up on resident concerns and advocates on resident’s behalf for the promotion of optimal health and independence
  • Ensures up-to-date information on residents’ profile and statistics, and provides timely report to the Executive Director/Administrator and liaise with the Ministry of Long-Term Care on relevant issues
  • Maintains close working relationship with attending physicians, pharmacists, laboratories, agencies, partner organizations and hospital and related disciplines to ensure timely and appropriate delivery of services to residents
  • Ensures coordination of resident care with different services, including dietary, activation, social work, environmental and rehabilitation services
  • Participates in interagency coalition meetings and activities as deemed appropriate by the Executive Director/Administrator
  • Ensures the appropriate supply and control of all pharmaceutical supplies
  • Assists the Executive Director/Administrator in the general administration of the LTC Home
  • Keeps up-to-date with developments and best practices in the field
  • Oversees all medical and nursing documentation for adherence to applicable legislation for legibility, relevance and accuracy. Initiates necessary action to maintain the same.
Qualifications for this LEAP Job Posting:
  • Registered Nurse with current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario;
  • At least one year of experience in geriatric and/or long-term care sector as a registered nurse.
  • At least three years of experience working as a registered nurse in a managerial/supervisory/team lead capacity in a healthcare setting.
  • Current CPR Certificate
  • Effective leadership and communication skills
  • Computer literacy required
  • Satisfactory Police Reference Check (with vulnerable sector screen)
  • Knowledge of First Nations history, language and culture is an asset
